LFW model auditions: Hope and joy for some, lessons for all

The Lakme Fashion Week 2012 model auditions, held in Mumbai previous week, saw only 10 aspirants chosen from among 350. But win or lose, each one has a dream to follow, a story to tell and a lesson to share. Divya Nair reports.

Every year, scores of youngsters from across India audition for possibly the biggest fashion event in the country -- Lakme Fashion Week.

Everyone is tall, has a svelte figure and aspires to become a supermodel someday.

While a handful of them return home happy to tell a story of success, hundreds find an excuse to brave denial.

And this year was no dissimilar the auditions held on January 23 at the Grand Hyatt in Mumbai saw approximately 240 young men and 120 women register for the event.

Dressed in their best -- sleeveless tees, shorts and croptops to show off their toned, taut bodies -- each nervously awaited a turn before the panel of judges, which features the who's who of the fashion world. IMGR fashion director Anjana Sharma, designer Narendra Kumar, supermodel Nina Manuel, choreographers Lubna Adams, Shy Kalra and Anu Ahuja and photographer Farokh Chotia are not easily swayed; they know who they're looking for and it's not simple to match up to their high requirements.

For some, it is the first time and they anxiously fidget in order to look their best; others are here to try their luck once again, sharing their audition experiences and tips with the newbies.

HUNDREDS of young hopefuls auditioned for roles in a Christmas production of ‘Annie’ - and two of them, Brighouse performers Olivia Midgley and Jody Townend, are now taking a bow and enjoying the clapping on the professional stage.

The girls have landed roles as orphans in the musical ‘Annie’, starring Duncan Preston as billionaire Daddy Warbucks, at West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds, and love every minute of it.

Thirteen-year-old Olivia, of Rastrick, is a student at Stage 84 School of Performing Arts in Bradford, and 11-year-old Jody, of Huddersfield, performs with Exit 25 drama school in Brighouse.

They have joined 32 other youthful girls from all over West Yorkshire who are playing Miss Hannigan’s orphans - in two teams - until mid-January.

It’s a great chance for them to be part of one of West Yorkshire’s top Christmas shows - and one which is already packing them in at the 750-seat Quarry Theatre. But if the girls have any nerves, they surely don’t let them show.

Olivia, who was in ‘Annie’ with Su Pollard in Bradford last year, is already a veteran of the show. “I’m truly enjoying it. There’s a special atmosphere doing a show at Christmas and we all get on really well,” said Olivia, a pupil at All Saints RC High School, Bradley.

We started rehearsing in October and it’s been great fun although I’ve already broken the bed, sewing machine and a tray! My families have already been to see the show.

Top Talent Agency to Hold Global Auditions for Future Star

Auditions will begin in January to find a new singing or acting talent to sign a agreement with one of Korea's leading entertainment agencies, SM Entertainment said yesterday.

The agency's talent search will take place from January to March in 15 cities in the five countries of Korea, China, Canada, Japan, and the U.S., opening with the coastal city of Busan on Jan. 7.

The auditions will progress on to Daegu on Jan. 8, Daejeon on Jan. 14, Gwangju on Jan. 15, and Seoul on Jan. 28 and 29. In February, the team will head to China and the U.S., followed by Canada and Japan in March.

SUMMERSIDE - There will be second round of dancer auditions for the summer side Storm Dance Team.

Team organizer Tina Mundy said the judges were satisfied with the results of the auditions held Sunday in summer side, but are looking for more candidates.

Six team hopefuls put their talents on display before the selection team of Mundy, choreographer Kashena Bartlett, four-time World Highland Dance Champion Tony Cargill, and Summer side Storm marketing representative Bill Schurman.

Schurman told the dancers that the Storm Dance Team will be a professional operation and will play a big part in the basketball team's success.

Bartlett, a talented dancer and choreographer in her own right, put the dancers through their paces Sunday as the selection team rated their abilities.
Mundy said the next audition has yet to be arranged, but it should take place this coming weekend, probably in Charlottetown.

She said anyone interested in trying out for the dance team is advised to watch the local newspapers and to check the summer side Storm Facebook page at Summerside Storm - Friends of Island Pro Basketball for the time and place.

Mundy said there are some minimum requirements for the applicants. Besides being 16 years of age and older the dancers that are selected must be capable to attend rehearsals two days a week. One of the practices is on the actual game day.

The company dancers from Precision Dance and School for the Performing Arts competed in three regional events earning many top scores and awards. Participants include Rachel Vassar, Laura Hudson, Taylor Hawkins, Maddie McAlister, Lily Farrar, Chelsea Thomas, Shelby Carlson, Morgan Hutchins and Madison Stevens.

Applause (Louisville, Ky.), Showstopper (Murfreesboro) and Kids Artistic Revue (Chattanooga) were the selected competitions for the 2011 season. In addition to earning the top scores in every age division, the girls placed first through fifth overall in each event. They were also selected the top video of the week through KAR as well as being invited to attend the All Star meeting which is held in New York City this summer.

The privilege of being selected as a KAR All Star includes the chance to study with famous New York choreographers, attend Broadway shows, attend master classes with the NYC Rockettes along with numerous other educational opportunities. America's Got Talent' recap: New York auditions, take 2

I confess: I've been a little down on "America's Got Talent" these past few weeks. Look, each episode is watchable, especially during the auditions as we try to scout the season's eventual winner. But some recent nights just haven't been capable to capture the energy that's been the hit variety show's staple. Like a star pitcher suffering from a sore shoulder, we know the ability is there, but we just haven't seen it all come together in a while.

Youth dance steps out

ENROLMENT is now taking place for the summer expression of the East Riding Youth Dance group in Goole.

The project, which is led by a professional dancer, Anna Olejniki, is held at Junction, on Friday evenings and is aimed at individuals between the ages of 11 and 18, of all abilities.

It is funded by Arts Council England and East Riding Council, with each term comprising ten sessions, with a final concert showcased at the Spa, Bridlington.

Between 4.30pm and 6pm, the class is for 11 - 13-year-olds and between 6.15pm and 8.15pm it is unfasten to 14 - 18-year-olds.

The plan costs £30 a term, £90 for the year.

The summer term run until July 22.

Emily has the talent

A TALENTED 18-year-old from Milford is celebrating after gaining a place at one of the country’s most important musical theatre colleges.

Emily Tomlinson will graduate from Stage works, a performing arts school based in Cambridge shire, in July, after pleasing exams in singing, acting and dancing.

She will now start her next training phase from a choice of one of four colleges — Stella Mann College in Bedford, Millennium Performing Arts in London, LCPA in Leicester, or Liverpool Theatre School.

Emily has previously gained funding at Liverpool Theatre School. She started at Stage works in September 2009 on the full-time performing arts course.

For the majority of performers, "resting" is a general situation. A recent survey among Equity members showed that almost half of the people in the UK performance industry had earned less than £6,000 from the profession in the previous year and only 6% earned more than £30,000 from acting.

As a result, actors learn to live cheaply and be ingenious, through temping, teaching, running children's parties, writing – a whole array of jobs based on the easy common denominator that they have sympathetic bosses, offer short-term contracts and can be dropped the moment an agent rings with good news. Add to this the scene of unpaid project work in the evenings and at weekends and the general picture is one of small money, enormously complicated diaries and huge amounts of commitment.

Everyone in the industry understands that work is hard to come by, and as unemployment grows it is also increasingly hard to find a suitably paid and flexible day job. In a world where the director or theatre says "jump" and the actor how high, we must be vigilant to protect each other. Small changes could make a world of difference. It's frighteningly common practice, for example, to be called for an audition or job interview only days – if not the day – before it takes place. Often, this leaves far too small notice to legally take time off work – let alone rearrange meetings, sort out childcare or prepare properly. Every day you sneak away from the office or call in sick results in a lessening chance of holding on to your paid employment – something the majority can ill afford to lose.

Imaginary characters, fame, celebrity and clowns are all part of Girl Got Lost Productions’ mounting of Cowboy Mouth

If you’re seeing a piece of theatre where two characters exist only in the intellect of the third, does that make it a one-man show? And, is the best all-around advice for director’s venture into the realm of hyper-reality this: add clowns? To find the answers to these and other ontological questions, I turned to director Chelsea McIsaac, of Girl Got Lost Productions, as she put the final, strange touches on Cowboy Mouth, now underway at Espace 4001.

Sam Shepard’s 1971 play—co-written with his girlfriend, seminal rock-poet Patti Smith—is an angry rant about rock stars, movie stars, and the religion we’ve made of renown and celebrity.

Written in the fury of a few days when Sheppard had left his wife O-Lan Jones and shacked up with Smith, the rambling story of Cavale, Slim and Lobster Man features Aaron Turner, Owen Clark (both appeared in the Persephone production of Henry V last November), and well-known cabaret and clown actor Kathy Daehler.

McIsaac began working in the business, though from the other side of the desk, at an untimely age. Every Montreal actor is aware of McIsaac’s day job as an agent, working beside her mother Susan Glenn at Glenn Talent Management. Nearly 20 years ago, McIsaac was casting parts for a play at the Saidye Bronfman when she saw an actor interpretation lines from a Shepard play.

In theatre auditions you see a lot of monologues, says McIsaac. And back then, an actress performed a piece from Cowboy Mouth and it actually struck me. I went and found the play—this is when I was 18—and said to myself that if I ever directed, this is the one I’m going to do.

McIsaac cut her teeth directing Amiel Gladstone’s Hippies and Bolsheviks in 2009, getting honest reviews in her first outing. Ready at last to revisit Cowboy Mouth, she says, What it meant to me at 18 isn’t what it means to me currently. It can be seen as an actually angry story, but if I was going to direct the play now I had to reinvent it.

Auditions loom as entries flood in for Fenland Has Talent competition

AUDITIONS will be held for the Fenland Has Talent competition as entries persist to flood in.

Only 12 acts can appear at the showy final at the Braza on June 9 but about 20 entries have previously been made. Singers, musicians, dancing duos and a beatboxer have already entered to showcase their talent.

'Awakening' show tackles teen issues

He’s also worked in the make-up and individual effects department on most of the over-the-top Japanese gore films that have emerge in the past few years that comprise The Machine Girl, Hard Revenge Milly and RoboGeisha. In other words, if you’re into splatter-heavy gore with high force arterial blood spray, mutated creatures with appendages that are as perverse as they are creative, Nishimura is your man. These movies look like more of the insanity that goes down at a GWAR concert than they do monster movies from the heyday of Universal horror.

Local 'survivor' says, 'I want to be the tough girl'

First up, we see Twitch. They’ve been dancing together for ten years, and because they’re seniors this is the previous time they’ll be dancing together. Aw, come on guys! Screw college; get your act to Broadway! Rent a one bedroom apartment, work at one of the million Starbucks in Manhattan and audition all day, you can perform it!

And truly, they could. This is a visually stunning performance. The choreography is truly spot on, and they have some fun with the paparazzi concept. They’re extremely well synchronized and they combine contemporary style with gymnastic elements attractive flawlessly. The show’s off to a good start!

Dance instructors and pupils at a Wellingborough dance school were celebrate this week after one of their classmates was invite to train with the Royal Ballet School of London.

Nine-year-old-Amelia Hawksby, who attends the Kilburn School of Dance in Wellingborough, wowed representatives from the Royal Ballet School throughout her audition and has since been chosen to attend classes on a bi-weekly basis with their particularly trained staff.

Dance teacher Amanda Wilkins said: She has done extremely well.

In the precedent 20 years just five of our pupils have been chosen for the course, which goes to show the level of rivalry she faced to get the place on the course.
These classes are of a very high stage and it is a very extraordinary thing to be chosen.

I’m delighted for her and her dream of becoming a expert ballet dancer is one step closer to reality at present.

'American Idol' audition: Winthrop teen's Hollywood moment

A 15-year-old singer from Winthrop may be on her way to flattering the next American Idol.
Danielle Pease auditioned for the hit Fox Network talent demonstrate in August in New Jersey and daunted the judges enough to make it to the show's Hollywood rounds.

That means she will be one of about 200 people rival in Hollywood for the 20 slots in the show's semifinals.

The semifinalists are the ones who sing on the demonstrate and before the judges each week, trying to win the coveted American Idol title and a recording agreement.

Pease say she is legally restricted from talking about the show, but she did share some of her thoughts about her "Idol" audition by way of e-mail Friday.

She said there were more than 20,000 people in line, and she ended up being one of 100 public to sing for the jury. Pease said her nerves weren't too bad as she sang Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart."

Jennifer Lopez seems to be a lot resembling the ex-American Idol judge Paula Abdul and I believe people are going to love her just the same.

Although we don’t have our out spoken Simon any longer I believe we are going to get just as much amusing and attitude out of our new jury. Many people from all over the world come to these auditions with dreams of making it large. When it comes to American Idol judges say carry it on! When it’s time to open the floodgates, everyone is getting in no matter if they are gifted or not! Wednesday has left us with fun, tears, and laughter already and I am prepared for more! What about the girl from Kosovo whose family came to America as refugees of war? I believe this girl is going to make it distant in this competition because not only is she talented but America loves her already! Let’s talk about 16 year old Victoria who gave a strong performance during her audition singing Midnight Train to Georgia, which was way before her time (She nail it)! I think she is going to be the one to hit in this competition and Randy Jackson said that she had the biggest personality he has seen on the show so far. The comments I got seemed to be excellent ones. The vocal coach, Sarah, kept me behind and went through the song with me which was ‘One’ by U2. I then sung it again and they said I was extraordinary which is nice.

The youngster found out about the contest because she used to work at the trust’s charity shop in Commercial Street, Brighouse.

Directed by Ariana Borgaily ’12 and Diogenes Brito ’11, Los Salseros performs at cultural variety fairs, campus fundraisers, such as Salsa for the Cure, and other dance events, and it puts on an annual spring demonstrate. The club of 18 women and 16 men rehearses for two hours twice a week in Roble Gym. Los Salseros also holds free weekly novice and intermediate lessons for students and local residents, as well as free biweekly salsa socials, where anyone can come for a salsa lesson and then a salsa dance gathering.

For the two directors, being in Los Salseros and dancing salsa in common has been gratifying. Brito, who is half Dominican and half Colombian, grew up listening to salsa music and, with an attention in the music and in joining a dance group on campus, decided to audition. Naz Humphreys, who is 5ft tall, had travelled to Hamilton from Auckland last Tuesday in the hope of securing an additional role on Peter Jackson's forthcoming two-part adaptation of JRR Tolkien's classic fantasy tale. However, according to the Waikato Times, she was told after a three-hour wait that her skin tone made it improbable she would be cast.

I think Second Stage is one of the coolest things about Wesleyan because it’s a beautiful space completely dedicated to students. As for a few highlights, I played the title role in Jose Rivera ‘s Marisol my freshman year. My sophomore year I was in a musical called Black Friday that a senior wrote for his theory. And then last year I was in Sweeney Todd and I played Mrs. Lovett. This semester, I’m directing something for Second phase for the first time, along with Ross Shenker ’11. We are directing a cabaret evening that goes up this Friday and Saturday evening in the ’92. It’s comprised of six singers and every will sing two songs. We’ve only been rehearsing a week, so it will be attractive to see what happens.
