Four ‘babes’ with loads of charm

Four lovable young Durban actors are the babes in KickstArt’s Christmas family panto, Robin Hood and The Babes in the Wood, which is proving a big hit at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre, where it runs until January 9th month.

Two rounds of exhaustive auditions were held to get two pairs of babes, aged nine to 12, to play the children in the demonstrate.

Of those children chosen, two did tremendously well in the Gateway Road to Fame singing competition at Umhlanga’s Barnyard Theatre, while the additional two have appeared for KickstArt in shows such as Peter Pan and Winnie the Pooh.

There are two pairs of babes in the demonstrate – Lindsey Morris, 11, from Westville and Joshua Arnold, 12, from Umbilo, who alternating with Kiara Teunissen, 9, from Westbrook and Andrew Sutton, 10, from Mount Edgecombe.

The kids are integral to the panto – the plot combines elements of the babes-lost-in-the-forest story based on an old English ballad of 1595 (the unique manuscript is preserved in the British Museum), which tells the story of two orphaned children, abandoned deep in the forest upon the orders of their evil uncle.

This tale is combined with the Robin Hood legend and a enormous dollop of comedy in the form of Robin Hood’s motley crew of merry men in tights, a actually villainous sheriff (Iain “Ewok” Robinson) and an unforgettable dame, Nurse satisfactorily (Darren King).

O. Perry Walker Holiday Dance Spectacular delights audience

Despite the freezing temperatures, it was a crowd filled of moms and dads, baby sisters, baby brothers, friends, grandparents ... all gathered at Martin Behrman Elementary’s hall for Making Spirits Bright: A Holiday Dance Spectacular, the winter showcase of O. Perry Walker College and Career introductory High School’s Dance Department.

One of the things that we as administration don’t say sorry for is that, when we’re going through the interviewing process, and we’re talking with people who want to come in and run our programs – whether it be a dance class, an athletic team or so forth, we tell them up front that we wait for our programs to be the very best, said School Administration Manager Tarence Davis.

We want to commend Mrs. Karen Davis-Jones, who is making our (dance) program the very most excellent in the city, one that rivals the program at NOCCA.

Teen star of Western a girl on a mission

Stealing scenes from Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin is barely child's play.

Yet, in True Grit, Hailee Steinfeld - a 13-year-old at the time - not only holds her own beside the seasoned performers but also establishes herself as one of a handful of pint-size actors who gave Oscar-worthy portrayals this year.

In the new screen version by the Coen brothers of the picaresque 1968 novel by Charles Portis, she is a energy to be reckoned with.

Steinfeld has the plum role of Mattie Ross, a pigtail-wearing angel of revenge bent on tracking and killing the no-good felon who slew her father and took his horse and cash.

With an unshakable faith in her Protestant ethic and her justice, Mattie gets to work hiring one-eyed, trigger-happy U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn (Bridges, reprising the role played by John Wayne in the innovative 1969 film) and striking a deal with an egocentric Texas Ranger (Damon).

Black Swan Review: The Price Of Perfection

Nina Sayer, the prima ballerina in Darren Aronofsky’s new thriller, Black Swan, strives for excellence, pirouetting and plieing with technique blameless, but without feeling; a master of precision without depth. Black Swan is structured around her yearning for the release from her self-imposed confines, her inability to let go, and find the passion in her art. Black Swan is visually arresting, expressively assaulting, a masterwork of technique and passion that feels similar to Aronofsky has truly found his own Black Swan within.

At the beginning of the film Nina’s dancing, like Aronofsky’s first three films, feels unfilled. Every step is completely timed, practiced, and thoroughly thought through. What Nina (Natalie Portman) lacks is the emotional connection to the movements that could motivate an audience. She is told as much from the New York City Ballet Company’s director, Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel), as he tries to select the latest Swan Queen for his production of Swan Lake. After flubbing her audition for the fraction, Nina wants to change Thomas’ mind, but when faced with having to push for what she wants, Nina backs down. Thomas challenges her, forcefully grabbing her in a kiss. Originally she gives in, only to bite back literally. She fears this may have ended her career, but by drawing blood Nina proved there was a darkness inside her that could be the absent piece in her achieving perfection.
